Trilha Pedra da Gávea - Rio de Janeiro
Pedra da Gávea trail

The name Pedra da Gávea was given to it during the expedition of Captain Gaspar de Lemos and Americo Vespúcio, in 1501,   where the bay of Rio de Janeiro (today Baía de Guanabara) also received its name .

The mountain has an altitude of 842 meters, making it one of the highest in the world along ocean shores.

The mountain trails were opened by the local farming population in the 1800's; today, the site is under the administration of Tijuca National Park.

There is a stretch on the route called (Carrasqueira) very close to the end, this is the most difficult point of the tour, it is worth the utmost attention, be well prepared.

The first legend on the trail emerged in the 16th century. XIX,   when a group of researchers from the Brazilian Historical and Geographical Institute found marks on the rock, interpreted as remnants of ancient Phoenician inscriptions.

The inscriptions were even translated and the site came to be presented by some as the ruins of a sphinx.

Others believe that Pedra da Gávea would be a portal to other dimensions, entrance to underground cities and a place visited by flying saucers.

The place is rich in stories and is spicy for visitation.
